Overview

TAI performed design studies and analyses for design integration and development of the Heavy Polar Icebreaker contract-level design. Identified solutions for the Heavy Polar Icebreaker (HPIB) that minimize cost, schedule, production, and technology risk. Each design cycle included HPIB specification compliance continuous updates with evolving Vessel Specifications, HPIB mission requirement compliance, proportions and weight, hull form and lines development, trim and stability, model testing conformance, etc. The overall objective of industry studies was to analyze industry input and refine a draft version of the vessel system specification. The scope included five (5) design spirals, ice model testing, tradeoff analysis, and cost and producibility studies.

The design is an all-steel construction monohull, triple screw ship powered by a medium-speed diesel-electric propulsion system with heavy icebreaking capabilities. The design has an integrated diesel-electric power plant and direct-drive electric motors driving a shafted, fixed pitch centerline propeller and a pair of port and starboard Azimuthing thrusters. In 2019, VT Halter Marine was awarded the Detailed Design and Construction of this vessel with TAI named as the Design Integrator.
